Bodegas Mitarte

Bodegas Mitarte owns 45 hectares of vines situated in Labastida in the Rioja region of Northern Spain, specifically named San Vincente de la Sonsierra y Haro, and is heralded, by some, to produce the very best of the famous Rioja wines. The Mitarte vineyard area is divided into more than 50 plots and, unlike many of the European vineyards, the vines in each plot can range up to 100 years old. Particular wines are made from particular age vines with the top wines often coming from the oldest vines. The most abundant vines are grown as the “bush” variety without the use of the posts and wires for support normally associated with vineyards. The very thick trunks of these vines are able to withstand the wind, even with a full canopy of grapes, but because the grapes are subsequently grown closer to the ground, the picking is a little harder on the back and this growing system is not suitable for harvesting by machine.

Mitarte is a family winery that, despite being founded as recently as 1992, has inherited a great tradition from their ancestors.

The winery produces wine with grapes coming exclusively from its own vineyards. The priority in production is quality rather than quantity and the harvest takes place with no rush, waiting for the last ray of light in October.

Santiago and his two sons, Ignacio and Antonio take care of all the planning and execution of the work with a small labour force which tends to the vines and works in the winery to obtain the best control of the production.
