Castello Vicchiomaggio
Castello Vicchiomaggio

Castello Vicchiomaggio is a beautiful castle and estate in the heart of Chianti. The estate covers a total of 450 acres, of which 75 acres are planted with vines. Wine has been made at Castello Vicchiomaggio since the 5th Century.

The owners, John Matta and his wife Paola, have restored this award-winning vineyard and its historic castle to the highest standards. John has twice been named Italian Winemaker of the Year at the IWSC, and Paola has transformed the castle into an ideal holiday location, offering beautiful rooms and self-contained apartments.

The most recent addition to the WineShare vineyards, Castello Vicchiomaggio has proved a great success with our members, both for its superb wines and as an ideal venue for short breaks in Tuscany. We hold a harvest celebration weekend each autumn, and Vicchiomaggio run regular events around cooking and winemaking.

John makes a range of red wines typical of the best of Tuscany, each from a different vineyard on the estate. As well as the tradtional Sangiovese grape, he also grows the local Canaiolo, and small amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, all of which ripen richly on the Castle's slopes through the hot Tuscan summer. His best wines have superb cellaring potential, and develop exceptional complexity.
